Medical Coding Industry in India has been around for 20 plus years and as of today India has the second-largest pool of medical coders after the US and the demand is increasing every day.

What is Medical Coding?
In the US healthcare system, the patient does not pay the doctor directly, instead the doctor’s office raises a claim which is then sent to the patient’s insurance to get payment. This claim contains standardized alphanumeric codes which are universally accepted for ease of electronic / digital systems. Medical coding – at a very basic level - involves conversion of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services and equipment into alphanumeric codes.

Medical coders translate the doctor’s notes into standardized codes that convey the following information to insurance payors-

• Patient's diagnosis - ICD 10 codes
• Medical services and equipment – HCPCS code
• Treatment and procedures done - CPT code
